THE PROS AND CONS OF USING STARCH-BLOCKING BEANS (ACARBOSE)

A extract from white kidney beans is now widely sold as an over-the-counter "starch blocker". These heavily advertised products claim to neutralize the starch in high-carbohydrate foods. All you have to do, the ads claim, is take a couple of these pills at the start of meal, and they'll block your absorption of about 75 percent of the calories you eat from carbohydrates. Starch-blocking products do contain a substance found naturally in white kidney beans ( as well as some other beans and also wheat) that inhibits or blocks amylase, the enzyme your body uses to break down carbohydrates in your intestinal tract. In fact, the starch-blocker supplements work in a similar way to the prescription drug acarbose (Precose or Glyset).
Both the supplements and the prescription drugs have serious drawbacks. They're not meant to aid weight loss- they're designed to help control blood sugar, but that doesn't stop unscrupulous manufacturers from pushing the supplements as a way to lose weight while eating all you want of anything you want. No studies of acarbose have shown that some people with impaired glucose tolerance are less likely to become diabetic if they take the drug. The side effects of blocking carbohydrate digestion can be very unpleasant. Severe cramps, diarrhea, and gas are likely. Many people using acarbose experience flatulence. Many doctors do not prescribe acarbose. Why take a costly drug with nasty side effects when you can benefit your health considerably more by controlling the carbohydrate in your diet.

HOW TO PROTECT THE EYES FROM BLINDNESS

The eye is a wonderful organ it makes a picture of everything it sees, and the nerves from the eye tells the brain about these pictures. The eyes are very easily injured, and for this reason they are well protected by their location in two cavities in the front of the skull, and by the eyelids, eyelashes and eyebrows.

In order to protect the eyes from injury and disease, it is necessary to give heed to the following:

1. Never read or do any close work such as embroidery in a poor lighted place.
2. When reading, do not read facing the light directly; it is better to sit so that the light will shine on the book from behind, over the shoulder.
3. Do not read under the sun
4. When doing any work that requires close attention, it is well to rest the eyes occasionally, either by closing them for a few seconds, or else by looking out of the window at the distant sky, or the green trees, or the grass for a few minutes.
5. Avoid using towels, soap, wash pans or face cloths that are being used by other people in public places. Those who have used these articles may had "sore eyes," and by using them you may contract some eye disease.
6. When making use of your PC reduce the brightness of the monitor or where a black eye glass to protect the eye from the direct rays of the light.
7. When a particle of dust or any foreign object gets into the eye, do not rub the eye, but remove the substance by washing with normal saline. If there is no normal saline at hand, clean boiled water may be used.
8. Smoke is very injurious to the eyes. If the stove where the food is being prepared is not fitted with a flue, the house becomes filled with irritating smoke. When this is repeated three times a day, day after day, it injures the eyes of every member of the family. At a very small cost flues can be built that will conduct the smoke out of the room and prevent this discomfort and injury.
9. The schoolroom where the children study should be well lighted. The children should be provided with seats low enough so that their feet will rest on the floor; and the desk or table should be low, so that when the book is lying on the table and the child is sitting erect, the print will be a foot from the eyes.
The child should be provided with study books that have large and clear fonts. After a child has had measles, scarlet fever or smallpox, he should not be allowed to go to school till fully recovered, because these diseases weaken the eyes as well as the rest of the body.

SYMPTOMS AND TREATMENT OF ACUTE APPENDIX

Acute appendix is the is an acute inflammation of the appendix, a small tube attached to the cecum. The cecum is the first part of the large bowel and the place where the small bowel attaches to the large. It is located in the lower right side of the abdomen. It is not important for the average layman to study the bacteria that cause the inflammation; but it is important for everyone to have some idea of the symptoms of appendicitis so that no patient will carelessly lose time in going to a doctor in case of such an eventuality. The first symptom is pain in the upper mid-abdomen, followed by vomiting. The pain is periodic; that the pain drops to the lower right side where the appendix is located. The muscles over this are become contracted in an effort to guard the tender area. This is a very important sign in making a diagnosis of appendicitis. Fever is usually not high, ranging from normal to only about 100 to 100 F. It is possible for symptoms to vary but this is usually the typical case. Diarrhea may not be present; usually it is not. If the pain suddenly stops and the patient feels better it is a sign that the appendix has ruptured and no time should be lost in getting the patient to the hospital.

Treatment of acute appendix

The treatment for all cases of appendicitis is surgery as soon as the diagnosis is made. Even though there may be a question as to wether the pain is due to an inflamed appendix or to amoeba or perhaps to painful ovulation in the case of a young woman, it is safest to take out the appendix. Surgery will not do any harm in the other two cases, and may be a life saver if it turns out to be acute appendicitis. Note well that abdominal pain with vomiting must be regarded as a possible surgical case and should be taken to a qualified surgeon for care.

HOW TO TREAT HICCUP

Hiccup is a sharp, usually repeated sound made in the throat, that is caused by a sudden movement of the diaphragm and which cannot be controlled.
Hiccups are usually caused by eating too quickly or too much, by an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervous or excited. Hiccup can also happen when something irritate the diaphragm.
TREATMENT
The treatment for hiccup is not standardized, there are a great many remedies a fact which indicates that none of them is very good. Nevertheless the spasms should be stopped before the patient is exhausted by them.
The following is a list of things to do which may bring relief:
1. Take a deep breath and hold it as long as possible before exhaling.
2. Drink a large glassful of cold water
3. Breathe into a paper bag
4. Press firmly on the eyeballs with care.
5. Take alumninuin hydroxide or aluminium trisilicate tablets.
6. Chew and swallow some throat lozenges containing nupercaine or some other locals anaesthetic.
7. Take 100 mili grammes of largactil
8. In extreme cases the doctor should be called.

IS PHYSICIAN-ASSISTED SUICIDE, WRIGHT OR WRONG?

Should suffering and dying patients be allowed to end their
own lives with the aid of a physician?
Physician assisted suicide is a case whereby a dying or
suffering patient is allowed to end their suffering by
committing suicide with the aid of a physician.
The term assisted suicide may also refer to the act of providing
an individual with the means to commit suicide, knowing that the recipient plans to use these means to end his or her own life. If a doctor provides medications
or other means of committing suicide with the understanding that the patient may intentionally use them to end his or her life.
Every assisted suicide is a last resort, and every decision to die
is rational, deliberate, and freely made. Good life and death- that
the ticket. Just take a pill and fall gently and eternally asleep.
Most advocates of assisted suicide do not want physician induced death limited to people with terminal illness(disease that
will cause death) only.
One advocate said " The law must change to permit an exemption to murder for doctors who provide a peaceful death to a suffering, irreversibly- ill adult
who makes a competent, repeated request for an assisted death, for example arthiritis is
irreversible so are diabetes, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord
injury, and some mental illnesses.
The "Zurich Declaration," issued
in october 1998 by the federation of Right to Die Societies, stated:" we believe that we have a major responsiblity for ensuring that it becomes legally possible for all competent adults suffering severe and enduring distress, to recieve medical help
to die, if this is their persistent, voluntary and rational request" in other words, the bottom line of the assisted suicide movement is not to death as last resort, but rather death on demand. What do you think? Is this morally right or wrong? Who will the blood be on his head? Is it on the head of the patient or the physician (doctor). For me it is totally wrong. A woman said on a debate conducted by Wesly J.Smith " I watched my son suffer
for four years before he died, he didn't ask to die, but I worry that I was wrong not to have asked the doctor to end it for him sooner".
I would like to hear from you, drop your comment, is it right or
wrong?

THE AIR WE BREATHE

We breath about sixteen or eighteen times a minute. The heart beats four times to each breath, exercise and fever increases the rate of breathing.
A person may live several weeks without food and several days without water, but death occurs in a few minutes if one's supply of air is cut off, as happens in case of drowning or suffocation. This shows how vital to life is a constant supply of fresh air.

Oxygen is the essential part of the air that the body must have in order to maintain life and produce heat energy.
The air we breath in contains enough oxygen but the one we breath out contains less, and should not be breathed again

THE DISADVANTAGES OF COCA-COLA AND PEPSI

Frankly speaking, soft drinks do not have any nutritional value( in terms of vitamins & minerals). They have higher sugar content, higher acidity, and more additives such as preservatives and coloring. Some people like to take cold soft drinks after each meal, guess what's the impact?
THE IMPACT
Our body has an optimum temperature of 37" for the functioning of digestive enzymes. The temperature of cold soft drinks is much less than 37, sometimes quite close to 0. This lowers the effectiveness of the enzymes and puts stress on our digestive system, digesting less food. In fact the food gets fermented. The fermented food produces bad smelling, gases, decays and forms toxins, which are absorbed in the intestines, get circulated in the blood and is delivered to the whole body. This spread of toxins can lead to the development of various diseases.
FEW EXAMPLES
There was a competition in Delhi University "who can drink the most coke?" The winner drank 8 bottles and died on the spot because of too much carbon dioxide in the blood and not enough oxygen.
Someone put a broken tooth in a bottle of pepsi and in 10 days it got dissolved! Teeth and bones are the only human organ that stays intact for years after death.
SUMMARY
Dont take cold soft drinks after meal or with meal. Dont drink more than one bottle of soft drink. It is even better than beer.
