There are little things that we neglect that matters a lot to our health. We will discuss some of these things, basically , as it affects the respiratory organ in details.
BAD POSTURE:
It is important that we sit and stand erect
in order that the lungs may have plenty of room to expand each time the breath is drawn. To stand or sit with a hunched back not only spoils one's appearance but also makes it impossible for the lungs to expand fully. As a result, the body does not secure a sufficient supply of air, which in time impairs health and renders the body susceptible to diseases like cold and tuberculosis.
People who work indoors, especially those whose work requires them to sit down while they work, should make it a practice to stand erect several times a day and take several deep breaths in order to fill all the air sacs with fresh air, thus keeping themselves in good condition
INCORRECT BREATHING: The nose is the natural entrance for the air. The nose is lined with numerous small hairs that help to strain out dust and germs that are in the air we breathe. As the air passes through the nose, it is also warmed and moistened. On the other hand, when we breathe through the mouth, the air is not warmed and moistened before it enters the pharynx. This makes the pharynx dry and causes it to produce much mucus. This leads to coughing and colds. A child who breathes through the mouth should be taken to a physician in order that the physician may examine the nose and throat and remove any adenoids that may be found.
ALCOHOL AND TOBACCO: Tobacco smoke injures every part of the respiratory organs. It inflanes the lining membrane of the nose, throat, trachea, and lungs. It produces coughing. It so injures the lining of the lungs that lung cancer and other diseases are more likely to be contracted.
Believe it or not, all kinds of alcohol also injure.the body. When a man drinks alcohol it can be smelled on his breath in just a short time after it has been drunk. This is due to the fact that as soon as the alcohol has entered the blood and has been carried to the lungs, the lungs try to get rid of the poison as quickly as possible. It is well established that drinking of alcohol renders one less able to overcome infections of the lungs.
IN SUMMARY:
1. Fill the lungs full of air each time you inspire. To do this, you must sit and stand erect
2. Avoid breathing dusty air.
3. Do not use tobacco in any form.
4. Do not drink any kind of alcohol.
5. Always breathe through the nose.
6. Do not wear a tight belt about the waist.
7. Practice deep breathing several times daily.
8. Avoid breathing stale air under the bed covers.
9. See to it that your house is well ventilated.
10. In daytime be out in the fresh air as much as possible, and at night open the bedroom windows wide to allow fresh air to enter freely provided the window is protected with a mosquito treated net.
