Joints are nourished by a fluid called synovial liquid, which lubricates as well. When the leg, for example moves, this liquid is spread over the knee joint.Unfortunately, we do not move some of our limbs enough or throughout their full range, the result being that some joints do not get the full nutritive benefits of the fluid. For instance many people begin having pain at the top of the shoulder joint. The reason is that this part of the body has not been exercised fully for days, as one very seldom raises the arm straight up.
The hip joint provides another good example of the same problem. It, too is not moved throughout its complete range very often.
Now what is the solution to this problem.? Yes, you guessed it. Every day we should exercise, moving our limbs throughout their full range, even one who is unable to take vigorous exercise can do this. First move the fingers and wrists, then the elbows and arms, extending them as far as possible in all directions. Give special attention to the shoulder joint. Put the arms high and swing them both forward and backward. Twist the arm as far as it will go both ways. Do the same with the lower limbs, paying special attention to complete movements of the hip joint. Then begin with the head. Open the mouth as widely as possible several times to lubricate the tempro-mandibular joint which permits movement of the law. Now roll the head all around, first in one direction and then the other. Next bend all around, first in one direction and then the other. Next bend the torso forward and swing it round in a complete pivotal motion to the side, then back and around again to the front. Bend as far as possible in each direction and repeat going the opposite way. You will find this is a most relaxing exercise and one that should keep your joints in good condition. Remember this is for joints and not for muscles, but both will be benefited. . .
